Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What are telecourses or teleWeb courses?
Telecourses/Telewebcourses are complete and integrated instructional systems that combine one or more form of telecommunications (e.g. video, computer/internet) with print materials for use by faculty and students as the principal components of a distance learning course.

  2. How does it work?
Instead of attending regular classes on a college campus, you take the course at home by watching the videos, studying the correlated textbooks and study guides on your own. Your instructor will give you a schedule and a syllabus to follow. However you may still be required to attend an on-campus meeting for the orientation, midterm and final exam.

  3. Are these transferable to a four-year university?
Questions about credit and transferability will be answered by your college of registration. Each participating college determines the amount of academic credit it will offer for a course and what must be achieved by the students to earn that credit.

  4. How do I view the videos?
There are three ways you may view them: 1.) Watch the course on your local PBS station or cable channel. 2.) Rent the videos; and 3) View them at your college's library. Your instructor will give you instructions on how and where to view to videos.

  5. How much does it cost to enroll/take the course?
Current California state law prescribes $18.00 per unit at the community college level. However, a number of exceptions may apply. Please get detailed information from your college.

  6. How do I know when the courses are airing?
Your instructor will give your the broadcast schedule at the first meeting or you may go to "Broadcast Schedules" in this website.

  7. Can I get credit through INTELECOM?
INTELECOM is not a credit-granting institution itself. You will need to enroll at one of our member colleges.

  8. If I don't need college credit, can I still take the course on my own?
Yes, you can. All you have to do is check the broadcast times and dates of your telecourse of choice in the Broadcast Schedule section of this website and you are ready to go. If you are interested in what book goes with your telecourse, please go to the Booklist section under "Member Services".
