The Windows Media Player won't install on my Windows 95 system?

We apologize for this inconvenience.  A separate Media Player for Windows 95 is available.  Contact INTELECOM to receive a free copy  of this player.  Instructions are provided for installing the player.

I get an error message when I try to play the videos using Windows Media Player 10?

The videos were encoded for use on Windows Media Player 9.  To play the videos using Windows Media Player 10, open the media player first.  Select “Open” in the media player and navigate to the .asx (video) files on each VCD to play the episodes.

Can the VCDs be duplicated by our college?

Yes. A licensed college may duplicate VCD sets for students enrolled in the course. This can be done off a master set purchased by the college (separate materials fee applies for the master set). Unlimited duplication rights are granted within INTELECOM’s Master Distance Learning Course License Agreement.

Can the VCDs be used for broadcast, cablecast, Internet streaming or for distribution on a campus LAN or WAN?

INTELECOM does not allow electronic transmission using the VCDs. Please contact an INTELECOM representative about purchasing broadcast-quality videotape masters, which may be used for transmission purposes.

Can student sets of the VCDs be used in the classroom, or for other audiovisual purposes on our campus?

Our standard distance learning license allows for the VCDs to be distributed only to students enrolled in the INTELECOM course. Public performance, classroom use, audiovisual or media lab use rights are not included in a standard distance learning license. These rights may be purchased separately.

Can students duplicate the VCDs?

Under no circumstances may students duplicate the VCDs for distribution to other students or assign duplication rights to students. It is your college's responsibility to make sure these rights, or any limitations, are communicated and enforced.

We want to transfer our VCD masters to an outside firm to handle our duplication. Is this possible?

We recognize that many distance learning programs are unable to handle their own duplication of audiovisual media. Under these circumstances INTELECOM will often allow institutions to contract with an outside vendor or commercial third party to provide this service. However, written permission must be obtained in advance from INTELECOM.

Can the video files on the VCDs be accessed directly for use within Blackboard, WebCT or other course management systems?

Yes. The video files on the VCDs have been encoded for use on both PC and Mac.   To access the VCD from within your course management system, link to the "AUTO-G.exe" file on the VCD, located within the "Autoptn" folder. This file will open the VCD interface, from which your student can play the video for either lesson on the VCD.

Can the video on the VCDs be digitally stored on campus servers and short clips sampled to supplement online courses?

No. Under no circumstances may the video files be digitally or otherwise edited, re-edited or sampled. This includes the identification of clips within digitally encoded episodes using techniques such as time code indexing or "chaptering".

Are the video episodes on the VCDs closed-captioned?

No. However, each VCD includes a complete transcript for each episode in PDF format. These are found in the "Transcripts" folder. You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer system to view these files. The Adobe Acrobat Reader can be downloaded for free at www.adobe.com.
